We are now in this phase!
Just outside Jos in Nigeria is the village of Shan Du. Dachung owns a piece of land there, which he had years ago put to his name for this purpose: an education center. A place for children to learn important skills. Not just reading and writing, but also handicrafts, how to manage money and personal guidance.

Phase 1a: preparation
In this phase, a lot is mainly happening in the Netherlands. We raise funds and fill piggy banks for various parts of the project. The support of our sponsors is crucial, without sufficient financial resources it remains a wasteland. In addition, we can use the first income to invest in relations with the local population. We keep in touch with the village head, who tells us which practical matters the village needs support with. Where possible, and if it helps the villagers in general, we provide financial assistance. For example, we will not use the donations to rebuild a burned-out liquor store, but we will, for example, help single parents with young children to plant a vegetable garden.
Phase 1b: turning plans into action
In addition to the investments in the village, we are now busy with the practical matters: designing the building, finding construction workers and equipment and drawing up the time schedule. This phase is expected to last a few months. First of all because we still have to fill the necessary piggy banks, but also because we do not want to do half work. We want to treat your donations with respect and return a good quality building to the village.

Phase 2: construction
As soon as the financing is in place, we will start! The foundation is laid together with a group of construction workers. Little by little it becomes more real. The site changes from an overgrown piece of land into a bustling construction site. A large heap of stones transforms into the back wall of the drawing room, the roof plates find their place on top. Tayo, a boy from the neighborhood, occasionally comes to help with his friends. He still walks almost 15 kilometers every day to get to his school, but when this school is finished he won't even have to leave the village for class. His enthusiasm is infectious and will cheer up even the grumpiest construction worker.

Phase 3: party time!
After months of hard work (and overcoming the necessary setbacks), everything is now in place. Built the walls, laid the floors, painted everything, furnished the rooms and swept the corridors... That calls for a festive opening!

Phase 4: the first day of school
Finally the time has come: the first day of school in the new school. Tayo is now 10 years old and already quite big. He walks into the schoolyard with his younger sister. His sister is a bit more shy, but Tayo boldly approaches the schoolmaster to shake his hand. The tables in the classroom are still empty, but Tayo sees one of his friends already standing and a mischievous smile forms on his face. This is going to be fun!

Bomen in de schooltuin | project gestart maart 2023
De volgende stap is: bomen planten. We hebben een ontwerp voor terrein: waar de school moet komen, waar de parkeerplaats en waar de schooltuin moet komen. En het mooie is: met de schooltuin kunnen we nu al beginnen!
Op het terrein willen we bomen gaan planten. We gaan voor bomen die goed groeien in het Plateau State. Dat zijn bijvoorbeeld mangobomen, guavebomen en cashewbomen. Als we de bomen in de eerste helft van het jaar planten, zijn ze in de grond voor het regenseizoen. Vervolgens kunnen ze na het regenseizoen zelfstandig verder groeien.
De vruchten die aan de bomen gaan groeien kunnen bijdragen aan de maaltijden van de toekomstige schoolkinderen. Daarnaast kunnen we de kinderen gaan leren hoe ze voor bomen en planten zorgen, hoe de natuur werkt en hoe ze oogst kunnen verwerken. Kortom: leermomenten genoeg!

Muur rond terrein voltooid | December 2022
We hebben in december 2022 de muur rond ons terrein voltooid. Met hulp van veel inwoners uit het dorp hebben we nu een stevige muur die afbakent

Het is nu voor iedereen zichtbaar dat ons terrein een beheerder heeft. Anders zou iemand een huis kunnen bouwen op onze grond. Dat is gebruikelijk in Nigeria: waar er een leeg stuk grond is, kan zomaar een huis gebouwd worden. Daarom is het goed om duidelijk te maken dat een stuk land van iemand is.

Daarnaast kunnen we bouwmaterialen nu veilig bewaren op ons eigen terrein. Als we stenen of cement zonder bescherming op het land laten liggen, dan worden ze zonder meer meegenomen door mensen die ook bouwmaterialen kunnen gebruiken.
